In today’s busy world, we have an ever-increasing number of distractions on our roads, which can lead to accidents, injuries, or even loss of life if not managed properly while driving our vehicles.
This is due to a lack of knowledge or skill regarding road rules and regulations as well as proper driving habits on the roads like speeding, reckless driving, aggressive driving, improper lane changes, failure to yield the right of way to other motorists, overloading, poor maintenance of the vehicle, etc.
In this blog, we would discuss the different defensive driving techniques that could help drivers to protect themselves as well others who share the road with them.
Driving does have its risks, no matter what type of vehicle you are driving. But, as you are all aware, driving also has its rewards. Regardless of which vehicle you are driving, however, there are ways to protect yourself while you’re on the road.
Many accidents are caused by drivers who are distracted while driving. This can range from talking on a phone to eating and smoking, and everything in between. Unfortunately, many drivers believe that simply being on the road allows them to disregard all safety precautions to the point of being irresponsible.
Unfortunately, such behaviour causes thousands of accidents every day. While there is no simple solution, there are some driving techniques that can help you stay safe on the road.
Defensive Driving instruction 1- Driving requires concentration:
Many drivers believe that driving is supposed to be a fun activity, but it can be extremely dangerous. Your brain is processing information at a rapid rate as you approach the road. It does this while taking into account all of the potential hazards you might encounter on the road. Your brain does not want to waste time on irrelevant information while driving, such as the radio or phone.
Defensive Driving instruction 2- Avoid distraction:
When it is time to drive, your brain wants you to pay attention to all of the traffic and road conditions, as well as the other vehicles around you. Therefore, it will shut out any other thoughts, and you have to rely on your brain to do this. Unfortunately, if you are distracted by a phone call or radio, your brain won’t be able to pay attention to the road. This can cause accidents to happen.
As a result, you should make it a point to stay alert at all times while on the road.
If you are distracted by a phone call, try to keep track of your car and the vehicles around you.
Make sure you know which lane you’re in and pay attention to the road conditions and other vehicles around you. If you’re driving and there’s a crowd around you, stay in your own lane and make sure you’re driving properly. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel when driving.
These are all very simple things to do, but your brain will not be able to process them if you are texting or talking on a phone. The more you can do to avoid distractions while driving, the safer you will be on the road. Don’t think that it is okay to drive with all of these things in your car.
Defensive Driving instruction 3 – Wear your seat belt or helmet at all times:
When driving a vehicle, always wear a seat belt or a helmet. It may not be as convenient for some, but it is unquestionably safer.
Defensive Driving instruction 4 – Know Your Surroundings:
Being aware of your surroundings is a very simple thing to do. It is something that can be done at all times, even when you are driving. Your brain will already have everything you need to drive safely. However, this is just one of many things that you can do in your car to stay safe on the road.
Defensive Driving instruction 5 – Keep an eye on what’s going on around you:
It’s critical to be aware of everything going on around you if you want to stay safe on the road. There could be traffic ahead of you, on either side of you, or to the right. Before you enter them, you must first understand what they are. You should check to see if there is any of it/something you should be aware of.
Defensive Driving instruction 6 – Keep yourself calm during the drive:
When you see an accident ahead of you, it is not always easy to get away from it. If you see an accident, you should slow down and pay attention to what is happening.
If you try to accelerate past the accident, you could run into more problems. While this is not something that will happen all of the time, there are many circumstances when you will find yourself in this situation. Therefore, it is always a good idea to know what could happen if you attempt to pass through an accident.
Defensive Driving instruction 7 – Ask for help:
If you are in a vehicle accident, make sure that you stay in your seat, buckle up and call for emergency support. If you are injured in an accident, make sure that you let the other driver know so they can pull over. Do not cross the centre line or drive over that person. Try and remain alert to the situation at all times. You should also stay with your vehicle until help arrives.
Please see the list below for additional driving instructions:
- Avoid driving at inconvenient times.
- Avoid driving at night and on dark roads since the visibility of other vehicles or obstacles in front of you is difficult.
- Be prepared for bad weather times and avoid driving in heavy rain and fog because your visibility will be reduced.
- Always keep your vehicle in proper working condition.
- Before each drive, inspect all electrical systems, including lights, windshield wipers, the air conditioner, and so on.
- Last but not least, follow traffic rules, which is one of the most important parts of defensive driving.
