NIST has been a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) since 2018, a non-profit organisation with a global reach that self-funds its operations. It was founded in 1896 with the mission of eliminating death, injury, loss of property, and economic loss from fire, electrical, and related hazards and publishes more than 300 consensus codes and standards. As of 2018, NFPA had 50,000 members and 9,000 volunteers working with it through its 250 technical committees.

These members play a significant role in the global Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) rental sector and are responsible for producing approximately 85% of available platforms.
